St. Barnabas the Apostle Orthodox Church
Sunbury, Ohio
With increasing membership St. Barnabas the Apostle Orthodox Parish has outgrown its current facility, a converted house in Sunbury, Ohio. In response, the community purchased 5.8 acres of farmland northeast of Sunbury. They reached out to us for the planning of their new permanent home and have begun fundraising in 2024.
The building campaign is broken into two phases. The first phase will be necessary site work, a temporary temple space, a community hall, kitchen, restrooms, a few classrooms, and one large classroom/conference room/bridal room. The second phase includes the permanent temple, converts the temporary temple space into a larger community hall, while the smaller classrooms will be converted into parish offices. Additions to the parish complex will include a bookstore, library, and a new classroom wing.
The temple will hold 300 worshippers and is designed with strong Orthodox and Byzantine traditions while also maintaining a sense of place in rural Ohio through materials and forms.
