Thomas Gordon Smith's pursuit of modern classicism continues with Mr Heyer for Our Lady of the Annunciation Monastery of Clear Creek. Mr Smith recommended our office in 2014 to continue his vision. The chevet of the abbey church was completed in 2017, and the East Residence Wing will be completed in January, 2023. Other phases remaining include the completion of the abbey church clerestory and tower, the abbey church interior floors, ceilings, and furnishings, the Novitiate-Refectory Wing, and the Library Wing.
Mr Heyer worked for Thomas Gordon Smith in his private practice in the 1990's while Smith was chair of the Notre Dame School of Architecture. They remained close friends until Smith's death in 2021.
Thomas Gordon Smith was the contemporary architect's source for understanding classical architecture through the writings of Vitruvius and the works of classical architects over the centuries who followed true to this model. Mr Heyer continues this tradition at Clear Creek, from the use of regional materials to the absolute adherence to a classical modular system for construction.
