Abbey of Our Lady of Ephesus
Gower, Missouri
The Abbey of Our Lady of Ephesus is the home of the Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles established in the Diocese of Kansas City- St. Joseph, Missouri in 2006. Designed for 50 sisters, the Abbey includes the main chapel (completed in 2018), the Abbey residence with Chapter Room, Refectory, Recreation, Dairy, Sewing, Parlors, Gift Shop (completed in 2010), and the Retreat House with 8 guest rooms for visiting priests (completed in 2015). All were built beautifully by Straub Construction of Shawnee, Kansas.
Although not the original layout of buildings we conceived in 2006 with a centralized chapel, our new arrangement with the chapel connected to the end of the residence and parlors is economical and expressive of a continually developing classical language. This new arrangement created many challenges, but allowed for new expressions within the monastic classical language of architecture.
