Sacred Heart Church
Fort Wayne, Indiana
This parish church of the Fraternity of St Peter was built in the 1960's for a Slovak Catholic community. It replaces the original church which was a military barrack transformed to a church. The current church interestingly retains a quanset hut feel with the curved roof and simple utilitarian brick and stone details.
Our task was to beautify the Sanctuary and we recommended a new Corinthian baldacchino to create a sense of monumentality for the Sanctuary which is at the end of a fairly long Nave. Mr Heyer enjoyed working with less material to give a proper yet contemporary sense of Corinthian: the entablature has no frieze (allowed by Vitruvius), and the fasciae of the architrave are delineated by painted lines on a stained wood panel. We also recommended restoration of the terrazzo floor, and designed new side shrines incorporated into the Sacristy door frames.
